In a place as rich in architectural history as Beaufort’s Historic District, every new project carries a special responsibility—to honor what came before while meeting the needs of how people live today. With The Craven, we embraced that challenge head-on—and we’re proud to share that this project was recognized with a Main Street Award for its contribution to Beaufort’s urban fabric.

Rooted in History, Designed for Now
Located on a prominent corner surrounded by landmarks—Beaufort’s original firehouse across the street and The Arsenal, built in 1798, just to the east—this pair of homes had to pass a rigorous design and approval process. The previous structure, a 1960s brick ranch, felt disconnected and out of scale with the neighborhood. In contrast, The Craven plan restores the street’s rhythm and reinforces the sense of place with classic Lowcountry proportions and architectural detailing.
A double porch wraps the front and side, embracing the oak-lined streetscape and creating a strong corner presence. Elevated four feet to address floodplain requirements, the home gains both privacy and opportunity—a raised front porch invites interaction while creating a spatial buffer from the street.
A Blend of Tradition and Modern Function
While the exterior speaks to Beaufort’s architectural legacy, the interior reflects how today’s families live. An open Living, Dining, and Kitchen configuration fosters connection, and every square foot is thoughtfully designed for livability and flow. It’s a home that balances formality with ease, tradition with innovation.

The result? A design that not only fits—it belongs.
Why the Main Street Award Matters
This award celebrates more than architectural style—it recognizes projects that enhance the character and vitality of a community. The Craven does just that, replacing an out-of-place structure with homes that feel timeless, intentional, and deeply rooted in Beaufort’s identity.
We’re honored to have contributed to the evolution of this historic district and to have created a home that respects the past while looking confidently toward the future.
