Community-Focused Living: Partnering with Developers to Create Timeless Neighborhoods

When we think about the neighborhoods we’ve had the privilege to design, there’s a common thread: each one was created with the belief that great communities come from great design and that embracing community-focused living fosters a sense of belonging and enhances quality of life.

Local Community-Focused Living

Our work is deeply influenced by Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND), a planning approach that takes cues from the most beloved towns and cities—places where homes, streets, and gathering spaces feel like they’ve always belonged.

Instead of sprawling, disconnected developments built around cars, community-focused living promotes TND communities designed at a human scale. We’ve seen firsthand how these principles translate into successful, highly regarded developments. Here are a few examples:

Newpoint Neighborhood

Newpoint was one of the Southeast’s first traditional neighborhood developments, and our involvement began early—designing more than 30% of its single-family homes and serving as the architectural consultant for two years. The vision was clear: create a community that felt like it had grown over time, with homes and streets designed for connection. Today, Newpoint is proof that TND creates enduring value—homes sell quickly, and the neighborhood has retained its charm for decades.

Habersham Neighborhood

Habersham is a nationally recognized TND that’s as much about community life as it is about architecture. Our designs here blend Lowcountry style with the principles of walkability and public gathering spaces. The town center, green spaces, and waterfront areas invite residents out of their homes and into shared experiences, the essence of community-focused living. This sense of place is a direct result of designing for people, not just parcels of land.

Coosaw Point Neighborhood

Since the inception of this JK Tiller–designed riverfront community, Allison Ramsey Architects has played an ongoing role in shaping its Traditional Neighborhood Design character—serving as consultants to the Architectural Review Board, designing the clubhouse and shared spaces, and providing model homes, custom designs, and more than 40 stock plan modifications. Each effort has reinforced the hallmarks of TND: architectural cohesion, walkable community planning, and a timeless sense of place.

Why This Matters for Developers

When developers partner with us, they get more than beautiful house plans. They gain a collaborator who understands how to balance market realities with the principles of great design. We know how to:

  1. Adapt plans to meet local ARB or historic district requirements.
  2. Modify designs for the specific context of the site.
  3. Create a cohesive, timeless architectural vision that sells homes and sustains value.

Good neighborhoods, rooted in community-focused living, don’t just happen—they’re the result of intentional planning and timeless architecture.
